Sarah MacDougall & TheHeroes -12:45PM

Sarah MacdougallYou might call it soulfulalternative country noir mixed with foot stompin’ rhythms and European folk-ballad traditions. Whatever you call it, this is heart wide open music that could make you cry but it will probably also make you dance. When MacDougall recorded her debut album in '05 she gathered together a great group of musicians to play on it. These musicians recently christened "The Heroes" have played with her ever since.

The Martyr Index - 2:20PM

The Martyr Index have an uncanny ability to create memorable folk songs which bear the lyrical sobriety of political polemics, yet without sacrificing any of the spit and piss that lies at the core of rockThe Martyr Index n roll. This is quite possibly what makes The Martyr Index a significant force in the underground punk rock milieu.

They formed as a musical collective in 2001, born of not only a shared, eclectic musical vision, but also of common social, philosophical and political ideals. The band has extensive musical experience and includes a number of punk rock music veterans from the Calgary scene.

Additionally, members of the band have been co-founders of Haymarket Café Worker Owned Cooperative, Calgary Food Not Bombs, the Revolutionary Anarchist Kollective, the Uprise Festival Society and the Calgary branch of the Industrial Workers of the World.

"This is irresistible, effortlessly catchy punk rock that spends as much time on melodies as manifestos. Seriously, if you’re not singing along by the second listen, you oughta be checking for a pulse." - Jordan Lane: Quiet Light

Cornerstone - 3:10PM

Influenced by the a capella quartets from the 1930s, Detroit native and East Vancouver favourite Khari McClelland sought out the beautifully talented voices of friends Ora Cogan, Matt Anderson, and Frazey Ford (Be Good Tanyas). Together they sat around the kitchen table listening to old records of the gospel and blues greats, learning not only their songs, but the histories and tales behind their stories. The result is an alchemical magic of four fresh voices that start from the foundation of music, spreading the power of gospel and displaying the unity of voices. You will most certainly be transported to another time & place when these folks are singing.

Big Bass Theory - 5:00PM

Big Bass TheoryThe heavy dub sounds of Big Bass Theory resonate with the deep bass & drums of a Jamaican thunder storm.   Based on Saltspring Island and led by Sean ‘SirBassa’ Hill, the group is rooted in solid riddims with serious bass frequencies. Full of soaring horns, steady bubble and skank, their music uplifts the soul with positive sound and vibrations with a definite dancehall feel and reggae groove. Last year they were part of the biggest dub ever dropped in this town, shaking the foundations together with pioneering dub poets Lillian Allen and Clifton Joseph, Austria’s Dubblestandart, and other special guests at Vancouver Folk Fest. Be prepared to be shaken’ & stirred!

Dorothy Stowe - 5:45PM

In the mid-1960s, as the Vietnam War escalated, over one million draft resisters and deserters fled the U.S., including150,000 who came to Canada – the largest single political exodus in US history. Irving and Dorothy Stowe from Providence, Rhode Island were among these disillusioned citizens. They settled in Vancouver, and -- along with a few other concerned activists -- founded the "Don’t Make A Wave Committee" (1970-1971), which later morphed into the international eco-watchdog Greenpeace.

"Green" came first, as the activists focused on oil spills and other environmental concerns, but "peace" quickly followed, with news of U.S. plans to test a one-megaton nuclear bomb on Amchitka Island, 4,000 miles northwest of Vancouver. The Don’t Make a Wave Committee rented a fishing boat to sail into the test zone, a still-current Greenpeace tactic of "bearing witness", observing, recording and attempting to disrupt environmentally destructive acts, from nuclear testing to whale harpooning to indiscriminate logging.

Dorothy continues to host Greenpeace events at her home in Vancouver. Greenpeace still adheres to the original principles of promoting peace, global disarmament and non-violence.

The importance of Greenpeace and its influence on the larger environmental movement cannot be overstated. UTV is honoured to present such a distinguished guest and defender of the earth on our Mainstage.

Olmeca - 6:00PM

OlmecaDisappointingly, the case with hip hop can often be that the wickedest MC’s have little real content or consciousness. And on the flip side, some MC’s who are driven by their need to express political ideals and who do that well, are not the most skilled on the mic or don’t have the presence to keep the audience engaged. Thankfully, we have MC’s like Olmeca to challenge that stereotype. He is able to merge unique and incredible bilingual rhyming skills with powerful lyrical content (and his beats are no slouch either). His performances are an unbridled blur of energy and he holds the crowd’s attention and engages them in a meaningful way, stalking the stage with a confidence that lacks bravado, bling or bullshit.

As a child of immigrant parents, Olmeca crossed the border in his mother's belly to be born in the City of Angels. He continuously migrated between Mexico and the U.S. and those experiences helped shape his view of the world. He is an artist that exists in two worlds: on the one hand, you have the modern day U.S. culture and on the other, a traditional Mexican upbringing. In between both of these, there exists a bi-national reality that he has been able to capture through his music. He understands dispossession and poverty and relates his experience and music to people of colour in the United States and also strongly identifies with the Indigenous traditions of Mexico.

Olmeca’s music contains a focused and undaunted political and cultural message. And this has helped him gain popularity amongst activist circles and popular movements of resistance who have sought Olmeca to present their struggle through his music.

His solo debut album‚ Semillas Rebeldes‚ initially created in the highlands and jungles of Chiapas, and then completed in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles, reflects the reality of current bi-national struggles of rebellion. Olmeca grounds us to realities often dismissed by the mainstream media and we can come to understand that music can be both an act and a means of creating rebellion.

A real MC for real times.

"Olmeca, an early-20s prophet who just might evolve into Southern California’s most articulate musical spokesperson since Rage Against The Machine’s Zack de la Rocha" -OC Weekly

Pura Fe - 7:00PM

"Playing searing, slicing, lap-style bottleneck guitar, Tuscarora tribe descendant Pura Fé blends world beat rhythms with Southern blues and her own powerful vocals." - San Francisco Chronicle.

Pura FePura Fe is best known as the founder of the acclaimed First Nations female a capella trio, Ulali, though she now has a burgeoning solo career, winning Female Artist of the Year at the Native American Music Awards in 2006. Raised by her mother, (a classically trained opera singer who toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra) and her gifted family of female singers that are descendents of the Tuscarora Nation (North Carolina), Pura’s voice soars the heavens, taking us on a visionary ride, elegantly stating the Indigenous influence on the birth of the Blues.

She holds a Smoke Dance champion title and is a recipient of the Community Spirit Award from the First Peoples Fund of the Tides Foundation, for her volunteered cultural contributions of traditional song and dance, working with Native youth groups in North Carolina. For her set on our Mainstage, she will be accompanied by Danny Godinez, one of Seattle’s finest guitar players.

Black Mountain - 8:00PM

Vancouver’s favourite artistic collective, endearingly known as the Black Mountain Army, was formed by members of Jerk with A Bomb, the Pink Mountaintops, Blood Meridian and the Black Halos, among others. Their self–titled debut LP came out in January ‘05 on Scratch/Jagjaguwar records and leapt off the shelves into the hearts and homes of a diverse range of folks. The buzz grew. Local shows were beyond packed. They were hand picked to tour with Coldplay. Bands like The Flaming Lips spent interviews gushing over them. Their album was reviewed in Rolling Stone magazine! But ultimately, none of this matters. What matters most is the music and the people making it. Black Mountain

Although oft compared to Animals-era Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Zeppelin, Black Mountain are very much their own band. Their songs are one part protest song, one part pop-cultural commentary, and one part pure unabashed rock n’ roll. Having neatly side-stepped the "political" band tag, Black Mountain are able to work well within the "personal is political" frame. A band comprised of conscious people, very much a part of their community, but certainly no pulpits to be found here. UTV is thrilled that Black Mountain is playing our Mainstage!

Kytami, DJ Phonograff, Kia Kadiri & Ndidi Cascade - 8:50PM

KYTAMI

KytamiKytami is an eclectic electric one-woman violin revolution. She is talented and versatile, and she can fiddle insanely fast. She’s had lots of practise. She started playing and performing when she was four, followed by hard-core classical training. Now she’s in high demand to record and perform in genres ranging from reggae, hip hop, live electronica, drum and bass, punk and metal.

She stays busy by being a member of numerous projects, three of which are performing at UTV this year: acoustic folk-punk duo Blackie and Kytami, Delhi 2 Dublin and the violin vs. vinyl hip hop duo Dream Sequence with Phonograff.

When Dream Sequence opened for Lady Sovereign at the Commodore last winter, they practically stole the show (at least from our vantage point near the stage). Kytami’s stage presence defies description (but we’ll try): a whirling dervish with an endearing smile and a devil may care attitude.

KIA KADIRI

Kia KadiriDrawing on jazz, funk and soul to create a sound that is truly universal, Kia has emerged as a stand out artist from a scene that has produced some of this country’s most exciting urban artists. She’s renowned for her ability to hype an audience, keep them fully engaged and take the call & response way above its usual level.

Kia is one of the rare female MC’s who stalks the stage with an urgency, insists the crowd put their hands up, all the while not missing a rhyme or a word. Her collabs & projects have been wide ranging: she’s recorded with LA underground hero Abstract Rude, Kinnie Starr, Prevail and others; performed with too many notable artists to list and is a key member of the mentoring group Hip Hop Hope.
