About

Whey-Ah-Wichen (Cates Park) is on the traditional territory of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. Under The Volcano would like to extend our thanks to the members of the Nation for their continued support.

Take a moment to read about...

How to enjoy yourselves, how to make our lives easier.

  • Alcohol is prohibited on site
  • No pets are allowed. Please do not bring your dogs and tie them to a fence or leave them in your car.
  • when the festival ends at 9:30pm, we would appreciate your cooperation in exiting the site in a respectful manner.
  • Please butt out your cigarettes in an appropriate place. This is a park, not an ashtray. Thanks.

Identifying us

Our volunteers will be wearing white t-shirts, with Volunteer logo on the back. Co-ordinators have CREW shirts. The Info Booth folks can also answer any questions you might have.

FESTIVAL FOOD

When you buy snacks, meals, and drinks from the vendors at the festival, you’re supporting local, socially responsible enterprises, as well as supporting fundraising for community groups. As an added bonus, UTV is given a percentage of the proceeds from food vendor sales, so filling your belly also helps to ensure that we generate much-needed revenue.

VOLUNTEER CREW

UTV is 100% volunteer run. Get involved! Positions include: Publicity, Site Set Up, Admission Gates, Info Booth, Security, Parking, Volcano Food Booth , Recycling. Call, write or fill out the online volunteer form...

RECYCLING AND COMPOSTING ON-SITE

We have on-site recycling and composting stations to help reduce our impact on Mother Earth. You can toss all returnable drink containers as well as newsprint/ newspaper into clearly marked bins all around the site. You’ll also find convenient buckets to scrape your food waste into, which will find its way into a composter and ultimately into an organic garden in the City.

Things to keep in mind:

  • read the signs on the recycling/composting bins BEFORE you toss your stuff into them;
  • napkins and all unmarked plastic (like cutlery ) can NOT be recycled or composted.
  • please put garbage in garbage cans, not in recycling. Recycling and composting are things everyone can do everyday, if you want more info or tips on how to make it happen, email : bike@resist.ca

FESTIVAL ADMISSION

UNDER THE VOLCANO IS THE ONLY MAJOR FESTIVAL IN VANCOUVER WITH A BY-DONATION TICKETING SYSTEM. Since our revenue is generated mostly through your donations, we rely on this support to be able to put on the best festival possible, highlighting progressive politics and bringing in artists and speakers from around the corner and around the world. We are accountable to you, our communities and allies, rather than to corporate sponsors, so by donating $10-$25, you are illustrating that you support our work. WE SUGGEST...

$10 FOR MODEST INCOMES AND STUDENTS,

$15-$20 FOR PART-TIME WORKERS,

$20-$25 FOR FULL-TIME WORKERS.

GETTING TO THE FESTIVAL

DRIVING
We encourage all festival goers to use alternate modes of transpo, as there is limited parking available on & around the site. If you drive, please respect our neighbours by not blocking their drive-ways or parking on their lawns. You will be towed away.

SHUTTLE BUSES
Free shuttle buses leave Safeway Parking Lot at the Broadway Skytrain Station approximately every 45 minutes starting at 11am. The last shuttles leave Cates Park at 9:45 pm.

*PLEASE BE AWARE THESE SHUTTLES DO NOT COME & GO ON A SET SCHEDULE AND THEY TEND TO GET BEHIND AS THE DAY PROGRESSES. PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING OTHER MODES OF TRANSPO.

REGULAR BUSES

ARTISANS MARKET REQUIREMENTS:

Our artisan market will be organized and run by the Seamrippers Craft Collective. UTV is commited to supporting artisans who are not engaging in exploitative practices. and we give priority to folks who have locally made items. All vendors with imported goods must prove that they have a fair trade relationship with the original artisan. For all info, pre-registration, set up times, etc email: seamrippers@gmail.com.

Thanks to Dirk & Nellie Oostindie, Pete Digiboy, Marisa for our amazing website, Tania Willard, Ken Aiken, SF-Pirg, and everyone at CCEC.

Also a very important thanks to Vancity, HEU, BCGEU & CUPE for their support. We also extend our gratitude to all the artists, community groups, speakers, and all other allies working for social change.

Also huge thanks to our crews & our volunteers!
We couldn’t do it without you.
